Beacon Rock

Continuing with my sepia theme - I painted this for a couple of my best friends (Emmy & Mike). This is Beacon Rock near Skamania. They will be moving back into their renovated house soon - this was a house-warming gift.

Sepia

I love old sepia-tone photos. The color evokes a rich, almost lonely feeling.

Santorini

Someday I will visit all of the places I paint. To make this painting of the Greek Isles I mixed in some pumice medium.

Portland

©2006 Elizabeth.

This is the Portland, Oregon skyline from the Rose Gardens - with Mt. Hood in the background. I took "artistic license" with the amount of trees in the foreground - but then again, there are a lot of evergreens in the area...

Donation

©2005 Elizabeth.

This painting is hanging in the stairwell of the main hospital at Providence Portland Medical Center. I donated it to the hospital in support of their wellness campaign to encourage employees & visitors to take the stairs.

I chose to reproduce my Haystack Rock painting on a larger scale for this project, because I felt that it would be a good theme for a Portland Hospital...

Awakening

©2005 Elizabeth.

I've always been drawn to the image of the meditating Buddha. I painted this hoping to evoke a feeling of peace & tranquility.

For quite a while I have felt like this painting is not finished. I'm really not happy with how his jawline fades into shadow - I suppose one of these days, I'll pull it down from the wall and work on it...

Red Barn

©2005 Elizabeth.

My mother-in-law & father-in-law live on a very beautiful piece of land in the country. They have a great barn that they built on their property and I wanted to capture it in a painting. Here is a link to a photograph of their barn, which I used as a guide for my painting.

Calla

©2005 Elizabeth.

In Portland it can be a long wait for a sunny day. In the Spring, the flowers are beautiful. In front of our living room window when we lived in Portland was a patch of calla lilies. I thought they might be appropriate subjects to paint.

I found this canvas at Goodwill for about $5 and decided to paint over it (my apologies to the person who had painted the previous work, now gone forever...) The dimensions are 2 feet by 3 feet, which is my largest work so far (if you don't count the mural in my room)...I thought it was a pretty good bargain at five bucks... I foresee more trips to Goodwill & garage sales in search of canvases!

Haystack Rock

Canon Beach is one of the closest beaches to Portland. I've always loved this giant rock - Haystack Rock. Here is a photo.

Figs

©2004 Elizabeth.

This painting was a Christmas present for my sister-in-law and brother-in-law. I asked if they had any requests and "figs" ... "just not dried ones" was the answer.

P.S. I'm not completely happy with the way the photo of this painting turned out...But, that's digital photography for ya'.

Tuscany (mural)

©2004 Elizabeth.

This was my first attempt with painting murals. Scott encouraged me to try, so I did - on our bedroom wall. The dimensions are approximately 8x12 feet. I used a very limited color palette of red, yellow, blue and white latex house paint and a little bit of burnt umber from my painting supplies for shadows. (The image shown here is of several photographs pieced together, since I was unable to fit the entire painting into one frame.)

Four Chefs

©2004 Elizabeth.

This is a painting that I did for my sister-in-law and her husband. She asked me if I could copy a painting that they really like and I told her I'd try. The original painting "The Art of a Peel" by Ken Auster is HERE. I don't know if I did it justice, but I think they like it...

Apples

I took a few painting classes during Summer 2004 and this still-life was our first assignment. I was really looking forward to these classes, as they were to be my first painting classes. Unfortunately the course turned out to be not exactly what I was looking for...but, I may try to take more classes someday, but for now I am content to experiment on my own.

El EnsueƱo (The Daydream)

©2004 Elizabeth.

I was inspired to paint this after a trip to Eastern Oregon. There are many Hispanic migrant workers who work in the fields of Oregon, harvesting various crops. Even though this scene is from my imagination I wanted to convey the idea that this woman is lost in a daydream.

Starry Night

I've always liked the way that the grass turned out in this painting.

Poppy

©2004 Elizabeth.

This was the first painting that I felt compelled to paint. I had an image in my mind for a couple of weeks, but because I was busy with school I was unable to work on it. Once I sat down to paint it, I was finished in a couple of hours. I'm very happy with the results.

Sand Dollar

©2004 Elizabeth.

For this painting, I originally used blue hues for the sand dollar, but decided it didn't work. I painted over it and chose brown hues instead to complement the sandy background. I think it works better.

Reach for the Moon

This is Mt. Hood - about an hour outside of Portland, Oregon. I spent a lot of my childhood skiing on that mountain.

I was inspired to paint this after reading the book "Under the Tuscan Sun".

Joshua Tree National Park is my husband's favorite place. I finally got to see it in person and it is a pretty amazing place.

Jars

I was inspired to paint this after reading a book on Morocco. I love the vivid colors of the region - but, unfortunately this photo didn't quite capture the colors in my original painting.

Sailing

I studied different sailing photos to piece this painting together. I painted it as a gift for my good friend Jon.

Jack-o-lantern Tree

©2003 Elizabeth.

To make this I used a combination of acrylics and latex indoor house paint. It was an experiment of putting onto canvas an image I had in my mind.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

This was my second painting; for my younger son Finnegan. This was his lullaby song.

Baby Beluga

©2003 Elizabeth.

This is my first painting. I painted it for my son, Kiernan; based on the song "Baby Beluga". When he was a baby I would sing this song to him as he went to sleep.
